This post is in honor of a good friend of mine.  Actually, she is the person that first introduced me to Stampin’ Up and helped me through my time as a demonstrator.

Well, she recently told me that she has tested positive for colon cancer.  This news, as unfortunate as it is, is only compounded by the fact that her sister is on a donor waiting list for a new kidney and pancreas.  It was because she got tested to see if she could possibly be a donor to her sister that she ultimately found out that she was ill.  In spite of everything she says, “God is good!  I could not be her donor, and I was really bummed about that.  However, she saved my life.  I wanted to help her, and she ended up helping me!”

So this one is for the person that inspired it, my friend:

I’ve been a bit overwhelmed lately, so just a quick card this time.  I’ve been able to get my hands on a couple of Spellbinders Impressabilities metal templates.  I was attracted to them because of  the possibility of using them to create a faux letterpress technique.  While I’m not 100% happy with this card, using the templates in this way was super easy.  I’ll definitely keep trying.

Just a quick tip:  If you’d like to try the Impressabilities, be gentle. They are super thin and very easily bent.  Also, be sure to use a slow drying ink; I used Stampin’ Up’s craft ink.  I’ve read a recent suggestion that 2 be bought of each at a time–one for the whole image and the other to cut up for separate detail work (more bang for the buck).  I’ll most likely not cut mine up but I understand why you might.

I’m going to be taking a break from cards for a while as I will be busily attempting to finish my son’s second scrapbook before his 3rd birthday arrives.  I also will be working on items for my Etsy store too.  I hope to really have that up and going full force by next month.

It springs eternal.  Hope, that is.

Be well.

Or, for you crafters that’s CHA CHA CHA.  The entire crafting world as we know it has descended upon the state of California for the annual winter show of the Craft and Hobby Association.  For those of you who read my blog regularly and have no idea what I’m referring to most of the time, this event is the mecca of the papercrafting industry.  While I’m only really starting to learn about all of this myself, I can’t help but to fantasize what it would be like to attend.

Image a huge room full of people who spoke your language and got as giddy as you did about paper and its possibilities.  I like that “paper and its possibilities.”  I have to remember that one, but I digress.

Anyhow, in conjunction with all the big reveals and new product lines being unveiled, many companies and manufacturers are tweeting and blogging about contests and giveaways.  While the prizes are sweet, super-sweet in some cases…oh, I’m digressing again…I’m just on a mission to get my work out there.  While I always attempt to do my best work, sometimes I fall a little short of my expectations.  Most of my non-crafting friends think my stuff is great.  But I know better.  And I also know just how many amazingly, talented, crafty folks there are out there.

Since I only have ten crafty fingers, I’d better keep practicing.

A Boy Valentine. Inside Caption: "Ur Out Of This World!!!"

If you’ve followed this humble little blog, you know that I’ve made it a point lately to work on my street creditability.  That is, I’ve been putting myself out there a little bit more and I have attempted to showcase what I’ve been creating.  I’ve been paying a lot more attention to blog contests and company open calls.

Why?  Because frankly, I don’t know it all and I have a lot to learn.  I don’t mind critiques. But more importantly, if you don’t try, you’ll never know where you’ll end up.  Don’t worry, I’m not trying to become rich and famous.  I know that there are people out there who are only chasing their dreams in hopes of making lots of moolah and retiring before the age of 40.  To them I say, “Good luck with that one!”

Don’t get me wrong…I would love to not have to worry about having money or the lack thereof.  But, that’s not why I’m doing this.  That’s not the point.  And I honestly think that anyone who is putting themselves out there and are attempting to reach their dreams with all deliberate speed would to it anyway.  Without the fame.  Without the riches.  Just because it is what they were born to do, like singing or dancing.

Or, it is what they would do for hours on end without a break or even a decent meal, completely straining their back muscles and getting their hands all crampy, sticky and inky. Just because they loved what they did and it truly made them happy.

A few points about auditioning:

  • You must know yourself better than anyone else does.
  • You are much stronger that you realize.
  • You have everything you need to be successful.

Repeat this three-line mantra to yourself before every performance (or craft project).  I have faith you in you and I hope you never lose faith in yourself, because there will be times when you want to give up.  Just keep practicing and keep your act fresh.  Be ready at a moment’s notice to show ‘em what you got.

Take a deep breath.  {Whoo-sahhhhhh}.

Now get out there and break a leg.

Today, just for fun, I made some cards.

Just for fun, I decided to forgo my previously drafted, weighty blog entry and spend time playing.

Just for fun, I had fun.

My fingers are still all inky.  Job well done.

Enjoy.

If you’re looking for some updates on that new-ish comedy by the same name, this is not the place.  However, you’re welcome to keep reading. I’m really talking about discovery.  Play.  What my 2 year old son does every day of his life.

Like I wrote about my previous post, I spent a lot of late hours working to get ready for my last craft fair.  While I had fun and was able to tap into an almost unbelievable amount of adrenaline to keep me upright, I expended myself.  My body needed a break and my creative cup-that-runneth-over was empty.  So, I left my craft room in a most undesirable state and took a week off.  Of course, that doesn’t mean my brain took a break.  (Don’t you do most of your crafting in your brain anyway?  (Shaking my head…awfully hard to shut that thing down.)

When I started working again this weekend, the first thing I tackled was this collection of cards:

I didn’t necessarily plan to create these, but I had some really lovely red velvet ribbon that was calling my name.  I decided to truly “play” which meant I wouldn’t use a ruler, a template, or any hotsy-totsy die cutting machine. Noooo, sir.  I stuck with some basic tools and just decided to go for it.  The first card uses gold florist wire that I shaped into a star and a set of mini staples for a trunk.  The next card features white gel pen used to draw simple lines, dashes, and dots.  I played a little more with the pen in the third card.  Using a ribbon spool as a guide, I drew tree branches in the shape of a wreath.  I don’t think it could have been any prettier if I had used a stamp.  The ribbon isn’t perfectly perfect (I probably wouldn’t have used so much), but I like the inspiration behind it.

Sometimes you won’t have the perfect image, the exact size die cut, the cutest sticker or right color rub-on.  What you do have is you–your style, your creativity, your ingenuity.

And that’s enough.

To Market, To Market (Or, How to Price your Crafts) November 15, 2009

For the last couple of weeks I’ve been extremely busy getting ready for my first official craft fair.  So, in addition to my full-time job and being a full-time mom, I’ve turned my hobby into a full part-time job.

I didn’t really have a game plan in mind, you see.  As a matter of fact, I didn’t even “price” my wares until I began setting up.  That part I had planned to do beforehand; however, I ran out of time and was much more concerned with having enough product and a variety of product to sell.  If I didn’t have anything good to sell, who would care about the price anyway, right?

I’ve done a few quick online searches to see how people determine their price points.  I even looked at tips people have posted about selling at flea markets and the like.  Needless to say, I’ve didn’t come across any really useful information.  So what does a crafty person do when something doesn’t exist?  They make it up!  And that is exactly what I did.  As I began laying items out, I took into consideration the approximate cost it took to make, multiplied by my time and effort, minus what it took to secure the table (a 20% total donation), adding my “profit” and you get….a very confusing process.

My original plan was to treat each item as one large summation of a lot of small costs.  I was going to rely on what I had learned as a budding chef (oh yeah, I did that too once) and break each item down by the pound and ounce.  Or in this case, that would be foot and inch.  For example, a 12×12 inch sheet of paper that costs me $1.44 equals 1 cent per  inch.  If I create a card that is 6×6 inches, then I have spent 72 cents because the card is actually 12 x 6 inches in size.

While this is a very elementary example, you get the point.  The same would go for inches of ribbon and embellishments.  If a have spent $3 on 30 eyelets, I know that I have spent 10 cents per eyelet.  And so, I would transfer the costs into the price of the card.  That’s the easy part.  The hard part is accounting for my time and effort.  What is my time worth?  Only you can decipher that one.  However, when it all comes down to it, your customers want a good price.  And based on how much I sold and the fact that no one raised their eyebrows at me, I think I estimated well, especially for the first try. I was very humbled and very encouraged.

Take a look and be sure to tell me what you think.  I’ve signed myself up for another fair in a couple of weeks.  Wish me luck!
